Photography Workshop: The WATER SERIES (Milford, MI)

June 21, 2011 · Events, Lessons & Workshops, Senior Portraits & Models

A couple of weeks ago I hosted a photography workshop…. the 2nd of 3 this year.  It was themed, The WATER SERIES and was held at a swampy lake area of Kensington Metro Park in Milford, MI.  A handful of local photographers traveled out to work with me and get some fantastic images!  Working in-the- field (environmental) is really the basis of my workshops- there is a great deal of time spent actually taking photos, improving communication and sharing artistic vision.   While we’re working  and observing, photography topics such as challenging light, posing, camera settings, and composition come up.  It really is a great way to learn. This time around we had lots and lots of fun creating art in less traditional settings. We were lucky to do so with such an amazing team of talent.

My workshops typically begin with a child portrait session. We usually work with a child model  while the adult models are preparing for our larger shoot segment  later in the day.  As you can see,  I brought out some vintage wooden chairs and wardrobe  to put into the swampy waters.  Thanks, Mel, for hanging out with us that afternoon.  (She was a good sport part of the time, lol!!!!).   Have a look at what we were up to:

I invited (5) female models to join us for this workshop: Amanda, Lynn, Amy, Kaiya and Maria.  Thanks to Mak Styles, Corinne and Jacquie for doing an amazing job with hair+mu!!!!  I also want to send out my appreciation to Anna and Amy for taking care of wardrobe.

You girls all rock! It was my pleasure to spend the day with you.

It was super difficult to select only a few images of each model to share here on my blog. I plan to update my website workshop galleries with the images from this session very soon…. and there is an entire album of photos from this workshop already on Facebook. If you’d like to see more, check it out!

I usually spend a later portion of my workshop that highlights another talented local artist! A big thanks also goes out to Sumeyya of hennacraze for adorning a couple of the models with amazing henna designs. She is a true artist and it was delightful having her work as a part of the event.

Of course,  I want to take a moment and say THANK YOU to Emma S. for being an incredible assistant to me alllll day. You’re the best!   And for all of you who enjoy ‘behind the scenes’ shots out there, this next image is for you. It is an image of some of our group that day  taken by my friend, Tressie Davis (attending photographer)  I’m the first female from the left (with dark hair and my sundress tied in a knot). Why are we wearing leggings and shoes?  Uh… it isn’t exactly obvious in this photo but we were pretty much in a swamp!! LOL.  I am pretty sure there were fish and other stuff swimming around inbetween us all.  But it was worth it- we all survived.  Everyone was eager to capture the models and we basically forgot about where we were.  Images from other attending photographers can also be found and viewed on Facebook.  To locate the photos, simply look under my “tagged” photos…. as all of the photographers tag me in the workshop images they upload over there.

My next workshop will be held on October 9th (Sunday) and will be a  Bohemain/free-spirit fashion theme! I love love love the colors of nature in Autumn and cannot wait to work with a talented group of photographers again soon.  If you’d like to register for the event, please contact me at:  jenlynnalder@aol.com or on facebook.   This will for sure be my last event of the year.

And…….. this may seem silly but I HAVE been getting requests to do ‘water series’ sessions from local high school seniors and college students. If you would like a session like this I WILL do it.  Just ask !!! Artsy, creative, fun stuff is my specialty. The only thing I recommend is to make sure you book by August so that the outside temps are still relatively high.  Doing a water shoot in Sept or October can be REALLY chilly.  Stay tuned for an upcoming Sister portrait session and an Urban Kids Portrait Session sneak peek.  :)

May 18, 2011 · Adult Portraits, Lessons & Workshops, Senior Portraits & Models

Good Morning!   How is everyone doing?  Besides the weather being ridiculously chilly for May, things are going alrighty over here.  :)   Our charity golf outing is over with and was a big success, family parties have come and gone, and now I plan on catching up on my image post processing over the next couple of days.  Today I want to share with you a few images from a recent shoot.  I am going a little out of order in terms of completed photo sessions, but will catch up with the rest later…..

It was my first time working with  model, Chelsea.  She will also be at The WATER SERIES workshop on June 11th.  This will probably be my last workshop of the year so if you’d like to register, please contact me on facebook or jenlynnalder@aol .   Thanks to Corinne for a great job with hair and makeup and Anna for styling.  Lovely, right?

Stay tuned for more upcoming sneak peeks……

Photography Workshop (Detroit, MI Photographer)

April 23, 2011 · Lessons & Workshops, Senior Portraits & Models

Alright- so it has been about a week since my last workshop and I have finally finished up my images and have a few minutes to sit down and blog about the experience with you all.  Honestly it was SO much fun.

This workshop was my first of 2011 and was themed Urban Arts & Drama.  I have decided that if I am going to host workshops, I want to keep them fun and exciting with lots of new material, models, and unique concepts/locations each time around.  Last week myself, along with a handful of other great photographers, met up in Livonia, Michigan, with the group of very talented models above.   In addition to the models, there was a great hair/makeup team in place including MAK styles, Jessica Doggett, Anna Stevens and Amy Vardijan- who really helped make it all possible.  Thanks also to Emma S. for assisting me all day!  :)   The actual workshop was held at a Marriott hotel conference room suite but we did go out into this chilly parking structure for over an hour to take some edgy natural light photos. I am not sure if you can tell just by glancing at the shot above but it was cold outside…… really cold. lol.  seriously.  In fact, it snowed the next day.  Have a look at more:

In addition to be great looking- Chad is super flexible. Uh…… right?

The workshop was styled by Anna Goldstone of Flair by Anna, who did a fabulous job! She was assisted by Jordan Grafe.  Amy rocked the chains in this shot and never complained about the uber low temps!

And Kurt never disappoints!  Doesn’t he have an amazing look?!  I was thrilled he was in town to participate in this event.

The female models featured select items from local award winning fashion designer, Kelly Lynne’s Fall collection.   Kaiya, Laurenda and Jennifer are shown below in some of her pieces.

At all the workshops the photographers also do get to spend time practicing technique on couple shots!  Here is one example:

The organization of this workshop was intentionally a little different than the others.  This time there were (3) distinct parts!   One of the other segments focused on using indoor window light and a child model. The focus was dramatic/artsy headshots.  We used a couple different warps:

The last segment of  this workshop featured a local guest artist.  The artist was Sumeyya of Henna Craze.  I have worked with Sumeyya several times in the past and am delighted to do so each time!  She is VERY talented.  She spoke to the participants about her art and process and then actually decorated a couple of our models for a photo shoot.  At the last minute, we decided to keep this segment of the workshop at a warm and cozy indoor spa area.

Laurenda wore an incredible back design…..

And Jennifer had an amazing design on her shoulder area:

The participants of this workshop are also posting some really amazing shots on facebook!  Some of them have yet to get started but the images out there so far are quite impressive!  Visit my Facebook Page to see more!  If you’d like to see a collection of past workshop images- stop by my website- go to Lessons and Workshops area and click on Photo Gallery.

My next workshop will be held on Saturday June 11th in SE Michigan!  It is the only one remaining for the year that is scheduled at this time.  The theme is: Water Series  (not underwater) and if you’d like to register send me a note:  jenlynnalder@aol.com.  It will be Fabulous and I would LOVE to see you there. :)

Have a happy Easter everyone!  Stay tuned for updates from future sessions.  I have lots of fun stuff on my agenda.
